Upcoming Charity Art Auction raises funds to help save the Coromandel Brown Kiwi
Art for a Cause: New Zealand Artists raise funds for the Moehau Environment Group’s Kiwi Sanctuary
According to DOC, There are only about 68,000 Kiwi birds left in New Zealand.
We're losing 2% of our unmanaged kiwi every year – that's around 20 per week…
Two New Zealand artists joined forces to help make a difference and raise funds to help protect our precious Kiwi birds.
Ninette Kruger, NZ metal embossing artist, and Auckland artist Anna Mollekin are both passionate about conservation and protecting our natural environment.
They have collaborated to create a bespoke pewter Kiwi artwork, that will be auctioned to raise funds for the Moehau Environment Group Kiwi Sanctuary in the Coromandel
New Zealand Artists collaborate to Help the Coromandel Brown Kiwi
Tauranga Pewter Artist, Ninette Kruger and Auckland-based NZ Contemporary artist, Anna Mollekin collaborated to create this pewter Kiwi artwork for “Save the Kiwi” month, during October 2020.
Ninette translated Anna’s Kiwi drawing into metal by hand-embossing the design as a 3-Dimensional Pewter Artwork
Handcrafted Pewter Kiwi Bird
New Zealand's favourite icon, the precious Kiwi bird, was drawn by New Zealand contemporary artist, Anna Mollekin.
Anna has a long history of spending time in the Port Charles area in the Coromandel, close to where the Moehau Environment group is situated.

Nationally, Kiwi birds are in trouble. The main culprits are stoats and cats which kill 70% of kiwi chicks. If nothing is done, Kiwis face extinction in the wild within 30 years. Yet here on the Coromandel, kiwi populations are flourishing due to intensive predator control efforts.
Our Kiwi Sanctuary has 920 traps spread over 10,400 hectares. Since its establishment in 2005, we have caught over 1750 stoats, 815 weasels, 12,800 rats, 270 hedgehogs and 35 feral cats, making a huge difference to the breeding success of resident Kiwi. Traps are baited with donated eggs or salted rabbit meat, and are currently checked 12 times a year.
While Whittaker’s has to date sourced only Ghanaian cocoa beans to make its chocolate, it is now supplementing this with cocoa beans that meet its quality and ethical standards from other parts of Africa. Whittaker’s Chocolate Lovers will see changes to its packaging to reflect the cocoa origin change from next month.
