Westfield destinations celebrate Matariki with community events and experiences for the whole family
The activity is part of wider celebrations taking place in every Westfield destination across Aotearoa and, for the second year in a row, at Westfield Coomera in Queensland, Australia. To give families more time to come together, Westfield destinations across the country will be trading from 9am until 9pm on Matariki. Activities and experiences throughout the week are listed below.
WESTFIELD ALBANY
Matariki installation with mirror globes (Sunday 23 – Sunday 30 June)
Throughout the week of Matariki, customers can enjoy a unique installation in the plaza that features nine inflatable mirror globes which represent the starry night sky and the stones of the Umu Hāngī Pit.
Kapa haka performance (6pm on Thursday 27 June)
Families can enjoy a kapa haka on Thursday evening in The Plaza, which will be performed by Northcross Intermediate.
WESTFIELD MANUKAU
Matariki Interactive Display and Activities (Sunday 23 – Sunday 30 June)
The magic of colour theory has been used to create a coloured view finder, reminiscent of a telescope, that families can use to reveal the hidden icons on each star pou. Renowned Māori artist Manawa Tapu's artwork has also been layered throughout with images relating to the land and food.

Multi-disciplinary artist Tristan Marler (also known as Manawa Tapu) has created a meaningful piece that celebrates the new year. Tristian is of Te Rarawa/Te Aupouri descent and draws on his rich cultural heritage through his painting and printmaking practices, seeking to honour the past and explore the future of Toi Māori (traditional Māori art).
Manawa Tapu’s artwork will come to life as part of the interactive view finder display and activities.

WESTFIELD NEWMARKET
Te-Iwa-o-Matariki (the nine of Matariki) artwork
Multi-disciplinary artist Tristan Marler (aka Manawa Tapu) has created a meaningful piece that celebrates the occasion. Being of Te Rarawa/Te Aupouri descent, Tristan draws on his rich cultural heritage through his painting and printmaking practices, seeking to honour the past and explore the future of Toi Māori (traditional Māori art).
Immersive starlight installation (Wednesday 19 June – Thursday 4 July)
Light from the stars is a key part of Matariki storytelling, so we’re lighting up The Rooftop with the renowned tilt installation which customers can walk through and enjoy. Westfield members can also enter via the app to win 1 of 3 rooftop dining vouchers to celebrate with their family.
Kapa Haka performance (6pm on Thursday 27 June)
Join the talented Epsom Girls Grammar Kapa Haka rōpū as they perform at Westfield Newmarket to Celebrate Matariki, on Level 1 near Gucci.
Matariki dining passport (Available until Sunday 1 September)
To make get togethers even easier for families and friends over Matariki, Westfield Newmarket is offering a dining passport across the rooftop restaurants where customers can earn stamps towards free gifts and an entry into the draw for the chance to win a $1,000 Flight Centre Gift Card. Simply pick up your Dining Passport in-centre at the Guest Services Desk located on level 1 near H&M or Gucci, and spend $20 or more at rooftop restaurants to earn stamps and collect your prize.
WESTFIELD RICCARTON
Matariki installation and giant telescope (Monday 24 June – Sunday 7 July)
Discover the Matariki installation that represents the nine stars of Matariki with an LED tunnel leading to the giant telescope for customers to look through, revealing significant constellations. Located on Level 2, outside Decjuba.
