Life On Our Own Terms is an inspirational book of 19 short stories about men and women living in Aotearoa. These individuals appreciate that life is a gift for us to enjoy and they intend to make the most of it. In their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, mindful of their past experience they channel their energy into activities that matter. Age is irrelevant to these folks. They are celebrating life on their own terms and inspired by their example, whatever our age and circumstances, so can we!
Why I wrote this book
I wrote this book because I was interested in the stage of life where it is possible to look both back and forward. It is a very thought-provoking and empowering experience and helps to clarify who we are and what’s important in our lives. Increased longevity provides so many opportunities and brings advantages no other generation has had. Just as there are many ages and stages prior to mid-life, we have decades of ages and stages ahead of use. We are much more informed than our predecessors and given dramatic improvements in health care and the notable increase in life expectancy, there is a good chance many of us will live to 90 and beyond! It’s time to change our mindset about ageing, dispel our anxiety and pernicious views and comments, celebrate our and make the most of our extended lifespans.
What did I learn?
Chatting with these awesome individuals I learned that the process of reflecting on our personal journeys, helps us to make conscious choices about how we spend our time and who we spend their time with. I learned there is huge diversity within this segment of our community. I learned that later life offers new possibilities for personal growth and the opportunity to fulfil long-nurtured ambitions. As they age, these individuals are not chasing lost youth. On the contrary, they look forward to expanding their horizons by creating and making the most of the opportunities the future brings. They pursue their passions, proactively maintain their health and wellbeing, invest in meaningful relationships, enjoy a good laugh, seek new opportunities and challenges, engage in productive work whether paid or unpaid, and are connected to the community.
A huge debt of gratitude is due to the individuals featured in this book who generously shared their stories with me. It’s a privilege to be able to share these stories with you.

While Whittaker’s has to date sourced only Ghanaian cocoa beans to make its chocolate, it is now supplementing this with cocoa beans that meet its quality and ethical standards from other parts of Africa. Whittaker’s Chocolate Lovers will see changes to its packaging to reflect the cocoa origin change from next month.
