Fishing licences are on sale today as anticipation builds for the upcoming season. “Spring is on its way, and today marks a key date in the diary for keen anglers,” said Fish & Game New Zealand chief executive Corina Jordan. “With the season starting on October 1, it’s a good idea for anglers to get in early and grab their licence so they can focus on sorting their gear and planning trips with friends.

Fish & Game staff throughout the country are busy conducting spawning surveys for trout and salmon to ensure there are sustainable fisheries for the future and to check up on stream and river health. Fish & Game New Zealand chief executive Corina Jordan said there were a range of ways to monitor spawning, from using fish traps to walking up a stream and counting.

The Minister for Hunting and Fishing, Hon. Todd McClay, has appointed board members to the New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust. The Game Bird Habitat Trust is an independent public entity established under the Wildlife Act 1953. Its functions include improving New Zealand’s game bird habitat and the habitat of other wildlife.

Licensed anglers and game-bird hunters are being urged to enrol so they can vote in the upcoming Fish & Game elections. 

New Zealand’s 12 regional Fish & Game Councils are elected by licence holders every three years and voting in the 2024 election opens on 19 September. 

Licence holders must register to be on the electoral roll to be eligible to vote in their region.

We boast a spectacular coastline and you will enjoy the best water activities including diving, snorkelling, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. Or just relaxing on a white sandy beach. Find out more about the Spirited Women - All Women Adventure RaceThis is an adventure race for women where teams of four choose from a short, medium and long-course adventure. Travelling together, they must navigate around a secret course by foot, mountain bike, and kayak, completing a few surprise mystery activities along the way—where no prior experience is needed! Stable sit-on tandem kayaks are provided for all teams and all levels of fitness and experience are welcome.

The course is kept a secret until the Friday of the race weekend. Once the teams receive their map/s, course notes, and briefing instructions, they have the evening to plan and prepare. On race day, the teams navigate their way around the course visiting checkpoints in the order specified (sequential or any order) on each leg.

But the Spirited Women is much more than just an adventure race; it is about creating an unforgettable event experience shared among girlfriends, it’s about women making time for themselves, their health and fitness. For many participants, the journey to the event is the most cherished part. Regularly getting together as a team to train, learn new skills, and supporting one another to push their boundaries. It strengthens bonds and relationships, bringing family, friends and work colleagues together for a weekend of unadulterated fun.
