Creative Travel Photography II - Graphic Design by Anne Johnston
Photography and words by Mike Langford & Jackie Ranken
Anne Johnston has been designing books with Mike Langford and lately his partner Jackie Ranken for many years – it is a creative passion for them all.
Based in Twizel, Award-winning photographers Mike and Jackie run creative photography workshops around New Zealand and across the world. They are generous with their teaching and don’t believe in holding back on tips and tricks – they love to empower people to find their own creativity and let photography be a means of self expression. They teach their students how to get the most from a DSLR camera to capture how a scene and a moment looked and felt at a certain moment.
So what to do after the workshop?
These field guides were the answer. Designed to fit conveniently in most camera bags, they are rugged enough to take a beating and the next best thing to having Mike and Jackie in the field with you.
Creative Travel II is the fourth in the field guide series. It is less about the technical and more about the emotional and aesthetic ideas that make photographs so unique, inspiring you to see travel photography in a quite different and creative way.
Below are examples from the guides.

Lisa was born in Auckland at the start of the 1970s, living in a small campsite community on the North Shore called Browns Bay. She spent a significant part of her life with her grandparents, often hanging out at the beaches. Lisa has many happy memories from those days at Browns Bay beach, where fish were plentiful on the point and the ocean was rich in seaweed. She played in the water for hours, going home totally “sun-kissed.” “An adorable time to grow up,” Lisa tells me.
Lisa enjoyed many sports; she was a keen tennis player and netballer, playing in the top teams for her age right up until the family moved to Wellington. Lisa was fifteen years old, which unfortunately marked the end of her sporting career. Local teams were well established in Wellington, and her attention was drawn elsewhere.
